1. One record, not three
Udhaar written in a diary, on a chit and in someone’s memory is udhaar that disappears. Keep one record per customer — name, phone, every credit bill and every payment — that anyone at the counter can open.
2. A limit for every customer
Decide how much each regular customer can owe at one time, based on how they have paid before. When a new bill would cross the limit, ask for part payment first. A limit makes the conversation easy: it is the shop’s rule, not your mood.
3. Look at who owes what, every week
Once a week, look at the list of customers with dues, biggest first. Old dues are the ones that never come back, so follow up on anything older than a month.
- Call or message with the exact amount and the bill dates
- Collect part payments — every rupee counts
- Stop new credit for anyone far over the limit
4. Make paying easy
Take udhaar payments by UPI as well as cash, and give a receipt each time. A customer who sees their balance going down keeps paying.
5. Reward the ones who pay
Loyalty points or a small discount for customers who clear their dues on time bring the good payers back — and they are the customers you want more of.
