GST paid on purchase comes back as input credit, so cost is counted before GST.

How the margin is worked out

The selling price is the MRP less your discount. Take the GST out of it to get the sale value, then subtract your purchase rate. GST on the purchase is not a cost, because it comes back as input credit.

  • Sale without GST = selling price ÷ (1 + GST)
  • Margin = sale without GST − purchase rate
  • Margin on sale = margin ÷ sale without GST

Margin or markup?

Margin is measured on the sale; markup is measured on the cost. The same rupees give a bigger markup than margin — both are shown so you can compare with your supplier’s scheme.

  • Markup = margin ÷ purchase rate
  • Trade margin = margin at full MRP, on MRP without GST

Questions

Why is my purchase GST not counted as cost?

A GST-registered shop claims the GST paid on purchases as input credit, so it is not a cost. If you are not registered, add the GST to your purchase rate.

How does a discount change the margin?

The discount comes out of the selling price, and so out of your margin. A 10% discount on a 20% margin takes away about half of it.

Does MedBox24 show margins?

Yes. Gross profit and margin are on the dashboard, and the reports show profit by product and by day.
